Kick Wax
Kick Wax for Classic Cross Country Skis
Kick wax, or grip wax as it is sometimes called, is essential for traditional classic cross country skis to maintain traction on snow, enabling the skier to move forward smoothly. The more adept the wax is at gripping, the better the skier's efficiency will be. Various waxes cater to different snow temperature ranges, and many products specify the range in which they perform optimally. It is crucial to determine if your skis are designed for waxing or if they are waxless, as the latter do not necessitate kick wax. Classic skis equipped with synthetic skins or fishscales in the kick zones do not need kick wax and are especially convenient for novices.
What is the Method for Applying Kick Wax?
Applying kick wax to cross country skis is straightforward and can be completed before heading out onto the snow. To apply, rub the wax stick onto the ski base in the kick zone, also referred to as the wax pocket. Apply a thin layer each time (aim for 3 layers total) and smooth each layer using suitable sandpaper or foam cork. Once the final layer is smoothed, the process is complete.
Other wax types can be applied to ski bases to enhance performance. Klister wax is ideal for snow conditions too slippery for conventional kick wax. Glide wax is applied to the ski's base outside of the kick zone to facilitate smooth forward movement.
