BMX Tyres
What Are BMX Tyres?
A robust pair of tyres is essential for enjoying your BMX to the fullest. The correct tyres will instil confidence, allowing you to progress as a rider regardless of the specific discipline you engage in. In the freestyle environment, tyres are available in a vast array of colours and designs, making them an excellent choice for personalising your setup and distinguishing yourself from others.
The pressure suitable for your tyres varies with each model. Therefore, it's crucial to check the recommended PSI for your tyres, which is usually listed in the product description or printed on the side of the tyre.
BMX tyres can be either foldable or non-foldable. Foldable tyres are lighter and are often made from extremely durable Kevlar material, though they are typically pricier than non-foldable options.
What Is Unique About BMX Tyres?
Aside from being smaller, BMX tyres differ from other bike tyres in several ways. They are generally wider than road bike tyres to offer increased grip and cushioning.
The primary distinction between freestyle and race BMX tyres is that race tyres are engineered to be light and narrow with a blocky tread pattern that is tailored for dirt tracks. In contrast, freestyle tyres are designed to be smoother to optimise grip on hard surfaces.
What BMX Tyres Should I Opt for?
When selecting BMX tyres, consider their diameter, width, and tread pattern. BMX wheel diameters typically range from 12 to 29 inches, although 20-inch BMX tyres are the most prevalent.
Freestyle BMX tyres are noted for their thickness, commonly ranging in width from 1 to 2.5 inches, with 2 inches being the standard. Such a width provides excellent balance and control. Race tyres, however, are usually thinner to decrease weight and reduce rolling resistance.
Tread patterns differ from model to model, so your choice should depend on your discipline. A high-profile tread pattern offers increased grip on dirt tracks, gravel roads, and forest paths, while low-profile patterns minimise rolling resistance on tarmac and concrete yet provide adequate grip for launching stunts.
