Each roller skate wheel is unique, differing in dimensions, hardness, and form. The wheel's diameter, or height, is calculated in millimetres (mm), usually ranging from 55mm to 65mm. The hardness, known as the durometer, is measured on the A-scale, spanning from 74A (extremely soft) to 105A (extremely hard).

What's the Ideal Size for Roller Skate Wheels?

The selection of your new quad skate wheels is influenced by your style of skating, broadly categorised into Indoor Skating and Outdoor Skating.

Wheels for indoor roller skating are generally small or medium, offering greater control and manoeuvrability on the rink. Rhythm skaters commonly opt for wheels measuring 62mm in diameter and 35 to 44mm in width. Figure skaters choose wheels between 55-65mm in diameter and 30-31mm in width. Outdoor roller skating wheels are larger with a curved surface to enhance stability. Standard outdoor wheels measure 55-65mm in diameter and approximately 40mm in width.

Roller Skate Wheels Hardness: Indoor & Outdoor

Indoor rhythm and figure skaters might favour extremely hard wheels for enhanced speed on smooth surfaces, with a typical range from 97A to 103A. Fitness quad skaters who journey outside often prefer softer wheels, acting as shock absorbers on diverse terrains, generally ranging from 78A to 85A in hardness. Wheels for speed skating are harder than those for fitness, enabling quicker rolling on smooth urban surfaces. Speed roller skaters use wheels with hardness between 95A and 98A.
