Roller Hockey Wheels
Which Roller Hockey Wheels Are Right for You?
It may seem self-evident, but selecting inline hockey wheels requires choosing ones that match the dimensions of your existing set. Roller hockey frames frequently feature a distinctive configuration where each skate wheel could vary in size.
To prevent any mix-up, many frames indicate the optimal wheel dimension. For example, a hi-lo wheel arrangement might appear as: 80-80-76-76. These figures denote the wheel diameter in millimetres. Such a setup implies that the two wheels at the rear should be 80mm while the front ones should measure 76mm - typically, the largest wheels are positioned at the back of the frame.
Choosing Between Indoor and Outdoor Roller Hockey Wheels
For maximum enjoyment in roller hockey, select wheels specially designed for either indoor or outdoor use. Indoor hockey wheels are softer, generally having a durometer (measurement of wheel hardness) between 72A-76A, providing superior grip on smooth indoor surfaces. Outdoor hockey wheels, with a typical durometer of 80A and above, are made to withstand the hard, pavement-like terrains.
Is it possible to use the same wheels for both? Theoretically, yes. Multi-surface wheels can function both indoors and outdoors and generally have a durometer of 78A or 80A. However, those who play hockey in both environments often opt for distinct sets of wheels for each.
