Balance Bikes
The Mechanism Behind Balance Bikes
Balance bikes, often referred to as toddler bikes or push bikes, are designed without pedals, allowing the child to propel themselves forward using their legs. If a child can walk, they can typically use a balance bike, which is why many models cater to children as young as 2 years old. These bikes are straightforward and enjoyable for little ones to learn with, sometimes taking just 15 minutes for a child to master them!
Choosing the Right Balance Bike
The utmost comfort for your child is achieved by ensuring the bike is sized so that your child can place their feet flat on the ground while maintaining a slight bend at the knee. To determine the correct size, it's best to measure your child’s inseam using a tape measure. Ideally, the inseam measurement should match the height of the bike seat, which means when wearing shoes, your child's feet should rest slightly above the seat.
Balance Bike Versus Training Wheels
Parents often ponder whether to opt for a balance bike or directly transition to a pedal bike with stabilisers. Training wheels can lower the risk of falls, yet they may make it more difficult for a child to learn balancing once they are removed. In contrast, balance bikes are excellent for enhancing a child's motor and balance abilities and often provide more confidence as their feet remain in contact with the ground.
