Longboard Decks
Which Longboard Deck is Right for Me?
A longboard deck is a crucial component of your setup. Similar to complete longboards, decks are available in a vast array of shapes and sizes, allowing you to choose between carving, cruiser, downhill, freeride, freestyle, and dancer options.
Cruiser longboard decks typically consist of 3 to 7 layers of maple wood, making them ideal for cruising and carving. Conversely, freeride and downhill longboard decks often contain 7 to 9 layers.
Regarding materials, maple longboard decks are the most traditional, featuring multiple veneers compressed together. Bamboo decks, frequently encased in fibreglass, offer a springlike sensation. Carbon fibre decks, though the priciest to manufacture, deliver a superior-quality deck that is both rigid and lightweight.
Top Mount vs Drop Through Longboard Deck
A key decision is whether to opt for a top mount or drop through deck.
Drop through decks lower the boards to the ground, providing greater stability during rides, while the cutouts prevent wheel bite when turning. These decks are perfect for high-speed activities. In contrast, top mount longboard decks are better suited for carving and cruising.
No matter which deck type you select, it is reassuring to know that all longboard trucks are compatible.
When to Update Your Longboard Deck
Many are curious about the frequency of deck replacement. In reality, there's no specific timeframe for when a deck needs updating; it depends on your riding frequency and longboarding style. Some decks last for years with regular use, while others may only be effective for a few months. If you start noticing cracks and chips, it might be time to consider a replacement.
There are indeed methods to extend your deck’s lifespan. The easiest is to minimise exposure to water and sunlight, as these weaken the deck and increase the risk of damage.
