Backcountry Ski Skins
Ascend the Peaks with Backcountry Ski Skins
When skiers venture beyond the confines of ski resorts and chairlifts are nowhere to be found, they must navigate their own path uphill on skis. Backcountry ski skins are the essential equipment that enable you to ascend slopes without slipping backwards. They are crafted from mohair or nylon fibres, arranged directionally to ensure they glide and grip at the appropriate moments. When pushed back, they grip the snow, and when moving forward, they glide smoothly across it.
Often called ski touring skins, backcountry skins are affixed to the underside of skis with skin clips at both tips and tails, and/or with adhesive that secures them to the base.
What Size Should My Backcountry Climbing Skins Be?
To determine the ideal size for your backcountry climbing skins, it's crucial to know the length and width of the skis they will fit. The skins should be marginally shorter and narrower than the skis to optimise grip on the snow. Some ski skins accommodate a range of ski lengths, facilitated by adjustable skin clips. If your ski length falls within the specified range, that would be an apt choice for skin length. This information is typically included in the product specifications.
The skin width should be approximately 5 mm less than the broadest section of the skis. Oversized skins may approach the metal edges of the skis too closely, risking damage. You can find the skin width in the specifications, product title, or by matching the skins to the precise ski model they are designed for.
Is It Possible to Shorten Ski Skins?
Trimming skins to fit is a common practice among skiers. This approach eliminates the need to source the perfectly sized skins for your skis. Many skin models include a trimming tool that allows you to adjust the skins to your desired size.
