BMX Chains
Acquire a Trustworthy Freestyle BMX Chain
The chain on a freestyle BMX bike serves the function of transferring the rider's pedalling force to the rear wheel. It must be a robust and long-lasting component capable of withstanding the intense use associated with freestyle BMX.
Half Link BMX Chain vs. Single Speed BMX Chain
When it's necessary to replace your worn-out BMX chain, the first major decision involves choosing between a half link chain or a single speed chain. A half link chain's links are designed to function as both inner and outer links, while single speed chains consist of separate inner and outer links. Each type has its own benefits and drawbacks.
The primary benefit of opting for a half link chain is the accuracy in adjusting the chain length. The half links enable you to alter the chain by ½ a link at a time, allowing minor changes to the rear wheel's positioning. A notable downside is the thicker side plates, which increase the weight compared to a single-speed chain.
Among these options, the single-speed chain is lighter, making it preferable if minimising weight is essential. This design has been utilised since bicycles were first invented, proving it to be a dependable option. However, for adjusting length, you can modify the chain by only 2 ½ links at a time, so making minor changes as with half-link chains isn't possible.
Which Chain is Suitable for My BMX?
The conventional width of a BMX bike chain is 1/8 of an inch, which is also the most prevalent size for freestyle BMX bikes. Some BMX racing enthusiasts might choose widths like 3/32 or 3/16 inch, which are quite narrow and therefore lighter - an important consideration for some riders. However, most freestyle riders favour the standard 1/8 chain.
