BMX Cranksets
What Constitutes a BMX Crankset?
BMX cranks are the metal arms connecting bike pedals to the bottom bracket. Freestyle cranksets are crafted to be durable and play a key role in generating forward motion on a BMX. In contrast to race BMX bike cranks, which are produced from aluminium or carbon fibre, freestyle cranks are made from steel or Chromoly.
Various Types of BMX Cranksets
Freestyle BMX requires mainly three kinds of cranksets: 1-piece, 2-piece, and 3-piece. The 1-piece cranks, secured by the bearings, are typically found on entry-level bikes and older models. The 2-piece cranks, equipped with a single crank bolt, are simple to fit and feature a spindle built into one of the crank arms. Among freestyle BMX bikes, the 3-piece cranksets are the most prevalent. Although generally heavier, they are sturdier than a 2-piece crankset and are frequently slightly wider.
Ideal Length for BMX Cranks
BMX crank arms are available in various sizes, ranging from approximately 125mm to 190mm, though most riders choose a length of 170mm or 175mm.
The desired length of your crank arms depends ultimately on personal preference, yet it does impact your riding. For those aiming to ride swiftly, longer crank arms are advisable. Conversely, if street riding appeals more to you, shorter arms should be considered for improved clearance.
In conclusion, ensure your crankset is compatible with your pedals, and be aware of your bottom bracket’s size.
