Understanding BMX Bike Headsets
The BMX bike headset is an essential component that links the fork to the frame, enabling the handlebar to rotate. The bearings in a BMX headset form the core parts, though components can differ based on the type of BMX headset you choose. Most prevalent today are the integrated headsets, although many high-quality non-integrated headsets are also on the market.
Determining the Right Size for a BMX Headset
The typical size for a BMX headset is 1 ⅛ inches, corresponding to the diameter of the fork steerer tube. Some models feature a tapered design combining caps of 1⅛ and 1½ inches, and race BMX bikes along with youth BMX bikes may have a smaller 1-inch headset tube.
Other notable components are the BMX headset spacers, which can change the stack height, and the C rings, which aid in aligning the fork within the headtube.
BMX Integrated vs Non-Integrated Headsets
Integrated headsets are favoured by both race and freestyle BMX enthusiasts. This type is named so because the sealed bearings fit directly into the frame's headtube. Installation of this headset type is straightforward and provides a sleek appearance.
Non-integrated headsets, or standard headsets, require separate cups that are inserted into the headtube to house the bearings. Typically, this type uses unsealed bearings, reducing friction when the handlebar rotates.
Proper Lubrication for the BMX Headset
When changing headsets, it is advisable to apply a generous amount of grease to the new components. Greasing the headset facilitates easier maintenance, cleaning, and replacement.
