Pro Scooter Headsets
What Is a Scooter Headset?
A pro scooter headset is a vital component in any scooter build. It is fitted into the headtube of the scooter deck, ensuring the fork rotates correctly. Every stunt scooter enthusiast recognises that the 360 barspin is a widely popular trick, and the headset is crucial in ensuring it performs smoothly.
Pro scooter headsets typically measure 1 ⅛ inches in diameter. These headsets are either with or without threads, though the threadless version is more prevalent on pro scooters. Scooter headsets can also be categorised as either integrated or non-integrated. Differentiating these types is important to confirm compatibility with your fork.
Integrated vs Non-Integrated Headsets
The main types of headsets are integrated and non-integrated. Determining which one you require depends on the headtube of your scooter deck.
Integrated headsets feature inbuilt top and bottom cups already present in the headtube. This design allows the bearings to be effortlessly positioned onto the deck’s headtube. While integrated scooter headsets are becoming more common on numerous models, it is advisable to ensure you have an integrated scooter deck.
Non-integrated headsets have a top and bottom cup that need to be pressed into the deck. These require more effort to install than integrated headsets and necessitate tools for the task. Additionally, non-integrated headsets might come with threads, and these threaded headsets are only compatible with forks that have threads.
Scooter Headset Bearings and Spacers
The bearings are located inside the headset cups. To suit the headset, two specialised bearings are required, doing the essential work to provide exceptionally smooth bar rotations. Generally, the bearings are crucial and often determine the choice of a headset.
A headset package usually includes a top cap, a C-Ring, and occasionally some headset spacers. If these are not supplied, consider acquiring a headset spacer. These can be important for filling any space between your clamp and headset, ensuring a secure fit.
