Longboard Trucks
Which Longboard Trucks Should I Choose?
Trucks are a vital element of your longboard configuration. Longboard trucks are the T-shaped components that attach the wheels to the deck and enable the rider to navigate turns. Selecting suitable trucks is dependent on the type of longboarding you plan to undertake.
The design of your longboard deck will influence whether you require top-mounted trucks or a drop-through truck mounting. With top mount trucks, you attach the entire truck to the underside of the deck. If your deck is drop-through, featuring holes at both ends, you need only disassemble a similar type of longboard truck, pass the baseplate with the kingpin through the deck, and affix the hanger from underneath.
Top-mounted trucks offer excellent manoeuvrability and a responsive ride, whereas drop-through trucks will provide enhanced stability and more effortless propulsion.
How Large Should Longboard Trucks Be?
The hanger widths of longboard trucks usually range from 150 mm to 180 mm. In general terms, longboard trucks should approximately match the width of your board but can be either wider or narrower. Wider trucks will offer increased stability but may be more difficult to turn and could result in wheel bite. Narrower trucks, while less stable, will facilitate easier turning.
What Angle Should my Longboard Trucks Have?
Acquiring the correct angle for your longboard trucks significantly influences how your longboard steers. The longboard angle pertains to the angle of the kingpin in relation to the baseplate. Longboard angles typically range between 35° and 55°. Broadly speaking, the higher the angle, the greater the manoeuvrability and turning capability you will achieve. A "high" angle of around 50° is most common and well-suited for carving, cruising, and newcomers. Conversely, a "low" angle is more fitting for seasoned and competitive riders looking to attain maximum speed during downhill descents.
